In this post, we will discuss the various assessment programs in the state of Ohio. This includes programs for Kindergarten Readiness to assessments for school performance. These various assessments are categorized into district assessments, state assessments, and national assessments.
District Assessments
NWEA MAP – a growth test designed to measure academic growth and progress of K-12 students in core subject areas. To learn in detail, go to NWEA MAP Test for K-12l.
The SAT Suite – A college admission test for juniors. Ohio students are familiar with the SAT as they take PSAT/NMSQT. All public colleges and universities in Ohio accept the SAT for their college entrance exam requirement.
State Assessments
Ohio State Tests (OST) – The OST is designed for students in grades 3 to 8 to assess Math, English, Arts, Science, and Social Studies. Students from grades 3 to 5 will not be allowed to use calculators, whereas students from grades 6 to 8 can use calculators. The assessments are online in a multiple choice question format with some other technology enhanced question formats.
Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) – The OELPA measures English language proficiency in four domains – Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. The OELPA is administered every year for students who are English learners. The grade bands for K-12 students taking the OELPA are: kindergarten, grade 1, grades 2-3, grades 4-5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Learn more about the OELPA in detail.
Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA) – KRA is a test used by teachers to measure the school readiness of children entering kindergarten. It assesses four areas of early learning and school readiness: social foundations (social and emotional development and approaches toward learning; mathematics; language and literacy; and physical well-being and motor development. It is not experienced as a test, rather it is a series of observations by teachers on everyday activities and student’s responses to questions.
Alternate Assessment for Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities (AASCD) – The AASCD is aligned to the Ohio’s Learning Standards and is designed to allow students with significant cognitive disabilities to demonstrate their knowledge and skill in an equally tough assessment.
Gifted Education Tests such as the CogAT – A gifted and talented student is one that performs at a remarkable ability when compared to his or her peers. National Assessments
National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP) – Often known as the Nation’s Report Card, the NAEP is continuously used to measure students’ progress in the US since 1969. NAEP assesses students in the fourth, eighth, and twelfth grades on mathematics, reading, writing, and science.
The goals of these tests is to ensure that education standards are being met in terms of both teaching and curriculum guidance to individual progress and accountability.
