Teaching Kids about Intentions

Teaching Kids about “Good Intentions” to be a “Good Person”

Most of us know the adage, “Actions speak louder than words”. The real reason we say that is to be able to understand someone’s intentions. People have three things happening at all times – intentions (their real thoughts), what they say out loud (their words), and how they actually act (their actions)!

The adage says that don’t measure a person based on what the person is saying rather on what the person is doing. This is because there could be a low correlation between intentions and what the person is saying out loud, but there is usually a high correlation between intentions and what the person is doing. So, in order to understand a person’s intentions and values, understanding their actions is probably your best bet than believing their words – what they say they’ll do.

Why is Parenting on Intentions Important?

There is a saying, “Har cheez mein niyyat saaf rakho, kaam asaani se hojayegi”. This means, keep your intentions clear and clean in all work and relationships, and you will reach your goals without pain. A lot of times people don’t understand the power of having intentions. In smaller things, even among brothers and sisters, we may not come out with our true intentions. But, keeping intentions good and out there is very important for your own success in life.

For parents, it is important to know the value of setting intentions for kids to follow good behaviour and to be a good person. Intentions help people stay focused in their daily lives. They reflect the individual’s values and are personally inspiring and motivating. Intentions and values are important because they eventually determine an individual’s actions and his or her actions will determine his or her output in this world.

Teaching Kids about Good Intentions

Teach children to not hide their intentions or misrepresent their intentions. Often, it could be difficult to explore true intentions, because it is such an automated implicit process for most individuals that unless you sit on it consciously, you may not realize that you can actually change it the way you want to deal with it. You offer kids a variety of intention choices and help them explore themselves and their thoughts in an effective way.

Teach them continuously the benefits of keeping intentions clean and outright. Once your intentions are clean, you don’t need to worry about what other people think about you. This helps them develop an individual personality independent of the judgments of other people around him or her.

With your own children, you might want to have a conversation about their daily intentions as you tuck them into bed at night. Whatever process you use, checking in and encouraging ongoing reflection is key.As children practice living intentionally and focusing on their guiding principles, they learn more about themselves and lead more focused, thoughtful, and productive lives.

Hope this is useful, thank you.
