Chess Opening Strategies for Kids

Chess Opening Strategies for Kids

What a beautiful game chess is! I remember playing at home with my uncle who was a chess champion. I quickly became one of the top percentile players of chess in my school, not like the absolute top but I usually used to be one of the guys to be constantly featured in semi-finals or finals in chess tournaments in school time. Nowadays, I don’t get much of a time to play a game but it is always fun to remember myself playing the game.

In this post, we shall cover some of the best opening strategies and moves for kids and beginners to learn and master the game, one move at a time. Playing chess is a beautiful way for children to apply their problem-solving skills. It is one of the games in which a child can truly challenge an adult or sometimes a professional at chess. So, we recommend all kids should be exposed to this wonderful game.

Spanish Opening or Ru Lopez Opening

The Spanish Opening begins with the moves 1.e4 e5 2.♘f3 ♘c6 3.♗b5. With these moves, White attacks the black king’s pawn and tries to gain control of the centre. Black has several ways to respond, but one of the most common responses is 3…a6 to repel the bishop.

The Italian Game

The Italian Game is one of the oldest openings recorded back in the 15th century. It is very similar to the Spanish Game but with a difference. The objective is to open up the game and take control of the center board. The game starts as follows: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4

The London System

This is an opening frequently played by the world champion Magnus Carlsen. The London System is an opening system in chess where White opens with 1. d4 and develops the dark-squared bishop to f4, then supports the d4-pawn with pawns on e3 and c3. The other bishop is developed to d3 (or occasionally e2) and the knights typically to f3 and d2. This set-up often results in a closed game, and the london system is one of the openings that are independent of what the opponent does.

The Danish Gambit

The Danish Gambit is an aggressive chess opening that sacrifices pawns for rapid development and attacking chances.

1. e4 2. e5 3. d4 4. exd4 5. c3

The Danish Gambit is not as popular at the highest level of chess, as top players are usually well-prepared to face it and can often defend accurately. However, it remains a popular choice among club players and amateurs who enjoy playing aggressive and tactical chess.

The French Defence

French Defence meets 1.e4 on 1…e6, and gets ready against the e4 pawn on 2…d5. This move positions black with the ability to create pawn chains, gain center defence, and manage space on the board. It is one of the most frequently used moves in chess. Statistically, if this move is used, then usually the player does well, although an experienced hand can defend very well against this move.

The Sicilian Dragon

The Sicilian Defence is considered to be one of the best openings for beginners. The objective is to fight for the control of the center board. This move often leads to exciting positions for both players to fight it out in the center.

The Queen’s Gambit

Probably the most classical opening move in chess. It starts with 1.d4 d5 2.c4.

Using this position usually leads to good center positions. This opening leads to planning, manipulating, improving the placement of your pieces, and many other important concepts.

So, these are some of the best opening moves in chess, especially for beginners. Hope you learned something new, thank you for reading.
