Forest Time for Kids - UnicMinds

Importance of Nature and Forest Time for Kids

“Shinrin-yoku” is the Japanese word for forest bathing, to walk in forests with no end goal, for the sake of it. Exposure to nature reduces cortisol levels which reduces stress in a person and the sounds from nature increases serotonin, the feel good hormone. When kids spend time surrounded by trees and natural landscapes, their stress levels decrease significantly. The forest’s sights, sounds, and smells create a calming effect on their minds and bodies.

Forests provide rich sensory experiences to children

Nature walking and nature immersions provide a sensory rich experience to kids in the form of textures of flowers, leaves, sand, and mud, sounds of birds, insects, and flowing water, fragrances  of flowers, and colors of different birds, sunset, and animals. This exploration of nature provides a different opportunity compared to academics for children to develop and showcase their interests and abilities which would otherwise not be explored in an academic setting.

Relieves children from the modern-day constancy of pressure

In nature, children might feel the absence of a constant pressure to understand or to do something. This enables children to be themselves and relieves them from the pressure of a traditional setting that they’re  used to day-in day-out.

Develops their muscle and motor coordination

When children spend time in nature doing trekking, running, climbing trees, hanging, building tents, playing outdoor games, kayaking, fishing, and other activities, it helps children to improve their immunity, develop balance, strengthen their muscles and agility. Importantly, it helps them with their coordination and fine motor and gross motor development.

Nature Develops inquisitive minds

Exploring forests offers a fantastic opportunity for kids to observe and learn about the natural world. Observing various flora and fauna in the natural environment can ignite children’s curiosity and a sense of wonder about the world. It also helps them understand the importance of nature, the delicate balance of life around us, and how various ecosystems thrive.

Connection with Science

Studying wildlife in forests introduces children to scientific concepts such as observation, data collection, and research methods. They learn how scientists study animals’ behaviour, habitats, and ecosystem roles. These experiences can inspire future scientists or conservationists among young explorers.

Improving Sleep in Children

In addition to boosting the immune system, engaging with nature through forest bathing has improved sleep quality for kids. The calming and soothing effects of being surrounded by trees and greenery can promote relaxation and reduce stress. This, in turn, helps children fall asleep faster, experience deeper sleep cycles, and wake up feeling refreshed and energized.

Helps with Respiratory Issues

Trees emit phytoncides that have antimicrobial properties which can reduce respiratory issues such as asthma and bronchitis. Children can breathe in these beneficial compounds and support their overall respiratory well-being by spending time in forests.

The unfortunate thing with the world we live in today is many urban settings don’t have access to a good forest area. However, it is important for parents and guardians to consciously take children on forest walks and forest holidays to foster a connection with the natural world. It is important to do a weekly nature trip as a family and  one forest stay or holiday a month for children to not miss out on nature’s healing and teaching powers.

Hope this is useful, thank you.
