White Hair in Kids – Is it something to think about?

If you’re reading this post, then chances are that you’re a parent who saw kids having white hair. An important disclaimer before we start writing this post is if you saw one or two strands of white hair in your kid, then it is common and nothing to be worried about. You may very well skip the rest of the post. And, even if there are more than a few strands of grey hair, there is nothing to worry about too much and the child should never be made conscious of the same. Rather, we should talk about it in a simple and non-defining way about the possible reasons and how to address them.

But, first why does any hair turn grey in the first place?

The visible part of a strand of hair is the hair shaft, and the invisible part is the hair follicle at the bottom. Each hair follicle contains a number of pigment cells that give color to the shaft. The more the melanin, the more darker the color of the hair.

What’s the main reason for the white hair in kids?

Genetics could be a main reason – if someone in your family tree had white hair in his or her early childhood, then the chances of it happening to your kid is very high. Genetics is a popular reason for white hair in children.

Does white hair in kids indicate any vitamin deficiency?

An insufficient diet can have an impact on your child’s hair health. Grey hair can indicate a deficiency in vitamin B12, vitamin D, Zinc and Copper, and Folic Acid. A deficiency in proteins can also lead to lightness in the color of hair, leading to anaemia. While it is something that could easily be corrected, it is important for parents to be aware of the same.

Can the white strands of hair become black again on its own?

A strand of white hair cannot become black in color organically. In a white hair, the follicle develops as colorless, and it is irreversible. But, once that hair strand is shredded, then the next follicle can have colored hair.

What are the home remedies for grey hair in children?

There are more than a couple of home remedies that you can try out in a simple manner.

  • Applying amla or gooseberry or almond oil is a good home remedy for white hair
  • Cow’s milk and ghee are believed to be good for reversing the process of grey hair. Take a tablespoon of ghee or clarified butter and massage into the roots of your kid’s hair smoothly.
  • Boil curry leaves in oil until the leaves become black and apply that oil.
  • Applying yogurt on hair can help in nutrition to the hair in terms of conditioning the hair and building protection

If your child has grey hair, then please consider it normal and in a non-defining way – after all nobody’s hair defines them as a person and especially a child of all. But an unusually heavy premature greying of hair in children might point to something that only specialists can see, like an autoimmune condition or vitamin deficiency such as iron, and it is better to consult a health and wellness expert on the same.

Hope this is useful, thank you.
