Robotics for Kids – The Setup That Every Kid Needs

Learning robotics needs a conducive environment for exploration. In this post, we cover the essentials that are needed to organize a simple and neat robotics workspace for kids.

  • Choosing the right location with access to a power source is important. Ensure the location is quiet and cozy enough to take you into deep focus.
  • Make sure the location has good lightning as robotics will require you to work with smaller components such as breadboards, chips, and connecting wires. A good lightning is a must for clear visibility.
  • Multiple storage boxes are a must to keep various components in each of these boxes separately and for ease of access instead of having to search for a diode in a haystack. Keep all your diodes according to size separately, similarly all the motors separately, keep the integrated circuit (IC) chips separately as per the function.
  • Keep the microcontrollers such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi separately.
  • A soldering iron and and solder are necessary, and a fan is important to keep the circulation and cool around.
  • Ensure there is enough space to keep a laptop around to program and upload the program in the microcontroller and have access to a USB power source from the laptop for specific functions.
  • Make sure there is a fire extinguisher handy if any component catches fire during the work. Kids need to be taught about the safety and the precautions to avoid shorting.
  • Have books and resources available on robotics for quick reference. Ensure enough space to quickly check any connectivity video or about a component on the laptop or tablet.
  • Ensure the chair and table are at a convenient height to not cause any disturbance to your consciousness and enable high focus on the table or assembly area.

Setting up a dedicated space for kids to do their robotics can make it very engaging and educational for kids. It can help children imagine their own creations and make fun robotics projects that unleash their creativity and ignite a lifelong passion for technology and robotics.

Working with robotics is a great way to inculcate the basics of mechanics and electronics in children, helping them understand how everything around them works from a television to a fan. It builds their logical thinking, mechanical skills, electrical and electronics knowledge and programming. It is definitely a must-learn STEM program for every child to try.
